If you are hiring a car for all or part of your Port Douglas holiday you are well placed to see some of the surrounding areas at your own pace. Kuranda is a little more complicated than a single destination though because the Skyrail Cableway and Scenic Railway start and finish at different locations in Cairns.
This means you need to get a bus transfer at either the start or the finish of your tour up to Kuranda so that you and your family or friends can enjoy the day together.
Reef and Rainforest Connections take the organisational hassle out of a self drive tour that includes tickets on the Kuranda Scenic Rail and the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, plus transfers to and from the Skyrail carpark. You have 2 1/2 hours of free time in Kuranda to enjoy the cafes, galleries, markets and other attractions in this picturesque village.
You can do this tour two ways. Catch the Scenic Railway for the journey up to Kuranda and the Skyrail back down, or visa versa. Importantly, in both cases you need to park your car at the Skyrail carpark which is on the Captain Cook Highway at Smithfield.
If you do the:
Scenic Railway first – your transfer coach leaves the carpark at 9.10am and you are back at your car at around 1.30pm.
Skyrail first – walk from the carpark to the Skyrail terminal for a 11.15am departure. You are back at your car at around 3.30pm.
Optional add-ons are:
Kuranda Scenic Rail Gold Class: $53 per person one way. You travel in an upgraded rail car with individual seats, a dedicated host service, plus a great selection of muffins, fresh fruit, local cheese and nuts, wine and beer and even a gift bag. Great fun.
Skyrail Diamond View: $10 per person. Your gondola has a glass floor so you really get a sense of skimming the tree tops. Each Diamond View gondola takes just 5 passengers so you get to fully enjoy the spectacular views.
